Blog about read-alouds: Your child as the main character in their very own book!

Welcome to the very first blog post from MyOwnChildbook! We’re so glad you found us. Let us tell you why our books are a little different from everything else you’ll find in a bookstore.

A new way to read aloud

Picture this: you’re sitting on the sofa with your child, opening a colourful picture book. But this time, it’s not about just any girl or boy. It’s about your child. Their name, their appearance, their hair colour, maybe even their favourite cuddly toy — everything comes back and comes to life in the story.

Reading aloud turns into a magical moment full of recognition, wonder, and joy. And that is exactly why we started MyOwnChildbook.

How it works: from name to book in 10 minutes

Creating your own book feels like magic, but the process is clear. You fill in a few questions: your child’s name, age, hair colour, eye colour and optionally a few favourite things. You then pick an illustration style and optionally upload a photo. Our AI writes a unique story, builds character descriptions, and generates the illustrations page by page.

The crucial step: before anything is printed, you see a full digital preview. Only when you’re truly happy with it does the book go to the printer. Not satisfied with a particular illustration? Regenerating it costs nothing and takes a couple of minutes. We’ve found that parents typically tweak one or two illustrations before approving — usually because they want a slightly different facial expression.

Why a personal book has so much impact

Children start to recognise their own written name around age three. Between three and seven, the magic of self-recognition in a story is at its strongest. A child hears their own name, sees their hair colour and clothing on the page, and realises: “That’s me!” That moment of recognition builds self-confidence, reading engagement, and a lasting positive association with books.

For younger children (under three), the read-aloud ritual itself matters most. Your voice, the closeness, looking at the illustrations together. For older children (eight and up), the book becomes a lasting keepsake — a tangible object they later rediscover and pass on.

Suitable for which moments

A personalised book fits practically every gift-giving moment: a birthday, a baby shower, a first-communion gift, Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or the end of a school year. Because you build the book yourself, you can tailor the theme to the moment — a summer-holiday adventure, an animal book for a 4-year-old with a pet, a grandparent-grandchild story as a Christmas gift from grandma and grandpa. The possibilities are wide.

It also works particularly well as a parent-to-child gift. You know your own child best, so you know which theme, which cuddly toy and which small in-jokes belong in the story.
