What works for a four year old
Imagination is running at full speed: a box is a rocket, and whether dragons are real is a serious question. Stories can be bigger than for a three year old, as long as it ends well and the main character is the one who decides how.
Around this age a child starts school, usually the biggest thing to happen all year. A book about that first day, about the knot in your stomach in the playground and about how it turns out fine, arrives at exactly the right moment.
Four is also when the birthday itself becomes an event: the child counts down the days. A present from grandparents in which the child is the hero holds its own next to the toys everyone else brings.
