A gift for a five year old

Five is the age where a child starts to imagine what someone else is thinking, and where the first letters become recognisable. A book with their own name in it lands twice over: as a story, and as something they can nearly read themselves.

What works for a five year old

Around this age comes the realisation that someone else can think or feel something different from you. It sounds abstract, but it changes which stories land: falling out and making up, someone being left out, doing something in secret.

Their own name is usually the first word a child recognises, before they can read. Around five they will point it out in the text and follow along over the shoulder of whoever is reading.

Friendship becomes the big subject: who is your best friend, who is allowed to join in. Stories where the child solves something together with someone else work better at this age than stories where they are the lone hero.

What it does not need: too many pages. A five year old will happily sit still for a story, but not for half an hour. A book that can be finished in one go is exactly right.

Frequently asked questions

Can a five year old read the book themselves?

Usually not quite, but nearly. They generally do recognise their own name, and that is often the nudge that makes them want to decipher the rest. Reading aloud is still the starting point.

Which story suits a five year old?

Something with someone else in it: solving something together, being new somewhere, or daring what did not work before. The occasions are on this page; you can write the story yourself in the form.

How does the book know how old the child is?

You enter the age when you make it. Sentence length, word choice and how the child is drawn all move with it: a three year old gets shorter sentences than a six year old, and looks genuinely younger on the illustrations.

What does it cost and how quickly does it arrive?

Making the book and viewing the full preview is free. As a premium hardcover it is printed after your approval and delivered within eight working days. The current price is at the top of this page.

What if the book is not what I hoped for?

Then you do not order it. You see the complete book in a free preview before anything is printed, and you can adjust text and illustrations until it is right.
