What works for a six year old
Reading is a job this year. A six year old practises at school on words that mean nothing to them, and stumbles over them. A story they appear in gives a reason to push through that no exercise book can.

Is a picture book not too young for six?
That depends on the story, not the format. Pick a plot where something really goes wrong and a style that is not too sweet, and it works well: readable without help but still worth looking at.
Does a book like this help with learning to read?
We make no promises about reading levels. What parents do tell us: a child who meets their own name in the text wants to keep going. Motivation is exactly what that first reading year runs on.
How does the book know how old the child is?
You enter the age when you make it. Sentence length, word choice and how the child is drawn all move with it: a three year old gets shorter sentences than a six year old, and looks genuinely younger on the illustrations.
