A gift for a six year old

Six is the year reading turns into real work. A book with their own name in the text is then more than a present: it is the text a child most wants to decipher for themselves.

What works for a six year old

Reading is a job this year. A six year old practises at school on words that mean nothing to them, and stumbles over them. A story they appear in gives a reason to push through that no exercise book can.

The humour shifts: silly jokes, things going exactly wrong, a grown-up doing something daft. A book for this age can happily make a joke at dad’s expense.

Tension can be real now. Where a four year old needs a soft landing, a six year old wants it to go wrong first. A story that looks like it is failing halfway and only comes good in the last pages is the most satisfying at this age.

What to watch: babyish is now an insult. Pictures that are too round and a plot with too little at stake feel like something for a little sister. Choose a sturdier style and a story where something is genuinely at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Is a picture book not too young for six?

That depends on the story, not the format. Pick a plot where something really goes wrong and a style that is not too sweet, and it works well: readable without help but still worth looking at.

Does a book like this help with learning to read?

We make no promises about reading levels. What parents do tell us: a child who meets their own name in the text wants to keep going. Motivation is exactly what that first reading year runs on.

How does the book know how old the child is?

You enter the age when you make it. Sentence length, word choice and how the child is drawn all move with it: a three year old gets shorter sentences than a six year old, and looks genuinely younger on the illustrations.

What does it cost and how quickly does it arrive?

Making the book and viewing the full preview is free. As a premium hardcover it is printed after your approval and delivered within eight working days. The current price is at the top of this page.

What if the book is not what I hoped for?

Then you do not order it. You see the complete book in a free preview before anything is printed, and you can adjust text and illustrations until it is right.
