Why a Christmas book with your child’s name is different

In an ordinary Christmas book a child watches someone else have an adventure. In this one they are the person who gets the sleigh going again, and that changes how they listen. The name runs through the whole story rather than sitting on page one, and if you upload a photo the main character on the illustrations really does look like them.

That it works is not a sales line, it is something you notice at home straight away. A child who recognises themselves in a story listens for longer and asks for it again. Why that happens is set out in our piece on a child seeing themselves in a book.

These stories are not only about presents. One is about an empty chair at the table, one about a village that loses its power on Christmas Eve and solves it with candles, and one about the last house of the night where somebody cannot sleep. Christmas Eve, the stocking by the chimney and the morning of the 25th all show up where they belong.

You pick a storyline here, but nothing is fixed. In the form it is simply text you can edit or replace entirely, and Father Christmas, Nova and Pip can be removed or joined by brothers, sisters, grandparents or the dog. If you want something completely different, start with an empty story field and write it yourself.

The book takes about half an hour to make and you see it immediately in a free preview: the complete book, page by page. Only when it is right does it go to print, as a premium hardcover of 21 by 21 cm on heavy paper, delivered within eight working days. If it is not what you hoped for, you simply do not order it.

Which ages it suits: roughly 2 to 8. For the youngest we keep sentences short and the scenes calm; for a six or seven year old something can genuinely go wrong before it comes good. You enter the age when you make the book and the text length moves with it. There is more about that on our page about a gift for a five year old.

Who comes along as standard

These three are ready as soon as you pick a story. They also appear on the mood illustration, so you can see straight away how they will look.

Father Christmas

Calm and patient, with a laugh you hear from a long way off. Red coat, wide belt, mittens that are always somewhere else.

Nova the reindeer

The youngest of the team. Curious, easily distracted, mad about carrots and enthusiastic slightly too fast.

Pip the elf

Green jacket, crooked pointed hat, tools in every pocket. Talks faster than he thinks and always means well.

You can remove all three, or add brothers, sisters, grandparents or the pet. Whoever you add appears in the illustrations too.

"Echt heel leuk! Onze dochters vonden het fantastisch. Je kan heel eenvoudig je eigen boekje maken en de kwaliteit is echt heel goed."

Questions about the Christmas book

Is my child really the main character?

Yes. The name runs through the whole story and your child is the one who sorts out what goes wrong, together with Father Christmas, Nova and Pip. Upload a photo and the illustrations really do look like them.

Can I change the story?

Certainly. You choose a storyline here, but in the form it is simply text you can edit or replace entirely. You can also write your own from scratch, and remove or add characters.

How quickly will it arrive?

The book takes about half an hour to make and you see it in the preview immediately. As a hardcover it is printed after your approval and delivered within eight working days. Allow for that if it needs to be under the tree.

What does a personalised Christmas book cost?

Making it and viewing the full preview is free. The current price for the premium hardcover is at the top of this page, plus shipping.

Which age is this book for?

It works best for children of roughly 2 to 8. You give the age when you make the book, and the sentence length and the way the child is drawn move with it.

Can brothers and sisters be in it?

Yes. You enter several names and everyone gets a part in the text and in the illustrations, not just a mention. For families with more than one child that is often the nicest version.

Does it arrive gift-wrapped?

It is delivered in protective packaging, not gift wrap. Many people order it to their own address and wrap it themselves, which also lets you check the book before it is given.

What if the book is not what I hoped for?

Then you do not order it. You see the complete book in a free preview before anything is printed, and you can adjust text and illustrations until it is right.
